One of the biggest issues with the Tracer Pack in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is how it reflects a disturbing trend in the gaming industry: paying for cosmetic effects. Tracers, the neon trails left by bullets, are an interesting visual effect that can make your shots look cooler, but do they really warrant a price tag? In my opinion, no.
When we’re paying for games like Black Ops 6, it should be expected that the core experience is intact, including aesthetics. If a game wants to add customization options, it should be done through in-game progression and not by creating additional barriers in the form of paid content. Instead of focusing on actual gameplay improvements or offering meaningful content like new maps or weapons, Call of Duty is now promoting paid tracer effects. This trend is becoming all too common, especially in AAA titles, where developers are increasingly trying to monetize every aspect of the game.
At the end of the day, the Tracer Pack doesn’t add any substance to Black Ops 6. It’s not as if the tracers improve your ability to aim, or offer any advantages in terms of gameplay. It’s just a cosmetic change, one that will fade into the background once the novelty wears off. And yet, players are being asked to pay real money for something that should be available for free, or at the very least as part of the base game.
I’m all for supporting developers, but when the content being sold is purely superficial and doesn’t impact the game in any meaningful way, it feels like we’re being taken for a ride. Instead of giving in to these cash grabs, let’s hold the developers accountable and demand better content that enhances the game itself, not just the looks of it.
